What was the challenge?
The mental health space is saturated with apps offering fragmented solutions, often lacking accessibility, personalization, or meaningful therapist interaction. Users seeking mental health support frequently encounter platforms that are either overwhelming or ineffective.
Our client, Amit Khanuja, envisioned Mitsu as a solution to these gaps: a comprehensive digital mental health platform combining clinically-backed tools with therapist-guided support. The challenge was to design a user-friendly app that reduced stigma, encouraged engagement, and offered measurable outcomes while ensuring privacy and security.
What was the goal?
Our primary goal was to design an intuitive, inclusive platform that:
Empowered users with evidence-based tools to understand and manage their mental health
Facilitated seamless interaction between users and therapists for tailored support.
Encouraged daily engagement through accessible, low-commitment activities and mood tracking.
Reduced barriers to mental health support by focusing on privacy, simplicity, and user trust.
Our Process
We followed a comprehensive design process, involving:
1. Research and Discovery:
• Conducted competitor analysis to understand existing gaps.
• Performed usability testing on similar platforms to identify pain points.
• Collaborated with therapists and users to gather insights on essential features.
2. User-Centered Design:
• Created user personas to represent Mitsu’s diverse audience (users and therapists).
• Mapped user journeys for both the app and the therapist dashboard.
• Defined the user flow to ensure seamless navigation and task completion.
3. Visual Design & Prototyping:
• Developed a mood board aligned with the brand’s calming and professional tone.
• Established a robust design system to maintain consistency across mobile and web platforms.
• Iterated on wireframes and high-fidelity prototypes with feedback from users and stakeholders.
4. Testing & Iteration:
• Conducted unmoderated user testing with 29 participants via Maze.
• Iterated on key screens based on feedback to improve usability and engagement.
What did we do?
We delivered a fully functional, user-friendly platform that included:
• Mitsu Mobile App:
Secure Onboarding: Implemented two-factor authentication and mPIN for user privacy.
Mental Health Assessments: Integrated clinically-backed quizzes (PHQ-9, GAD-7) to evaluate mental well-being.
Daily Mood Tracker: A simple feature for users to log emotions and track patterns.
Therapist Interaction: Enabled users to book sessions and communicate with therapists seamlessly.
Engaging Modules: Designed weekly programs with audio/video lessons and interactive exercises like fear ladders.
Therapist Dashboard:
Built a web app for therapists to manage user data, track progress, and provide feedback.
Results
Three months post-launch, Mitsu demonstrated tangible success:
User Engagement:
•85% retention rate among active users.
• 4.8-star average rating on app stores, with positive feedback highlighting ease of use and therapist interactions.
Impact Metrics:
• 78% of users completing the 8-week program reported improved mental well-being.
• High satisfaction with the mood tracker and interactive exercises, leading to 65% daily engagement on these features.
Business Growth:
• Increased downloads through a seamless website-to-app conversion funnel.
